New Proposal

I’m trying to get caught up with my blog posts, going into the third week of SoC. First things first, I should mention that I have updated my proposal and it is now available here. The new proposal reflects a lot of what I’ve learned since starting SoC: the current state of the Camino codebase, the review process, and what I feel like I’m able to do when it comes down to actually writing code.

Basically, to sum up the changes, less emphasis is placed on the social bookmarking ideas I had in my original proposal. What I’ve found is that more attention needs to be placed on the basics of the location bar: bookmark searches and the ranking algorithm. Even getting the code for the appearance patch up to snuff has been more challenging and time-consuming than I original planned. Hopefully, I will still get to work on the social bookmarking code, but I do not think it will ever land, or certainly not this summer.

I like those designs. Just wondering why no browser tries to shorten the URLs in a “better” way, similar to the “Recent Items” menu of Mac OS X. I would propose shortening URLs in the middle of the non-host portion if necessary, and furthermore comparing for similar entries in the list and try to keep them distinct.
Marc Liyanage did a good writeup for the “Open Recent” menu here: http://www.entropy.ch/blog/Mac+OS+X/2009/03/01/This-Is-Why-I-Love-Mac-OS-X.html.
